What is Nail Fungus?

Nail fungus is a dermatologic condition that can result in your nails developing white spots or your nails becoming yellow, thickened, brittle and separating from the underlying nail bed. Nail fungus is often a result of fungus on the skin (athletes foot for example) finding its way into the nail. Nail fungus most frequently involves the toenails, but may also affect fingernails.

How Much Does Nail Fungus Treatment Cost?

During your appointment, we can discuss the cost of treatment as it will vary depending on the treatment(s) prescribed. Aloe Dermatology accepts payment by cash and major credit cards, and you can learn more on our financing page.

What Are the Benefits of Nail Fungus Treatment?

Left untreated, nail fungus can result in permanent loss of the nail, as well as damage to the nail bed. It may also spread to your other fingers or toes. While nail fungus is a cosmetic issue for most patients, some patients develop discomfort and pain from their thickened toenails irritating the adjacent skin. Patients with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease have an increased risk of developing a secondary bacterial infections and should be more proactive and getting their nail fungus treated.

Am I a Candidate for Nail Fungus Treatment?

If you notice discolored spots under the nail or have brittle, thickened nails, you may have nail fungus. Dr. Llewellyn can provide you with an accurate diagnosis and discuss your treatment options with you.

What Should I Expect from Nail Fungus Treatment?

Nail fungus responds well to oral medications. While topical treatments are available, cure rates of nail fungus with topical prescriptions tends to be low. It takes several months for the nail to repair and replace itself, even after the fungus has been eliminated. Your nail may or may not grow back to its original shape. In some cases, Dr. Llewellyn may refer you to a podiatrist for surgical treatment of the nail.

Preventing nail fungus in the future is important, as you may be more susceptible once you have nail fungus. Some steps to take are:

  • Wear socks and shoes that allow air to flow around your feet and that absorb any sweat and moisture
  • Trim your nails and keep them clean
  • Do not share socks and shoes with family members or friends
  • Always wear sandals or shoes when you are in public areas, such as swimming pools and gyms
  • Use antifungal sprays and lotions to prevent foot fungus
