What Are Laser Treatments?

Laser treatments are cosmetic procedures that rely on high intensity light energy to restructure and rejuvenate the skin. Lasers are set to use specific wavelengths that are only absorbed by the targeted tissue, such as melatonin for dark spots. A specific wavelength of laser energy will not be absorbed by nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and other structures for which it is not designed. The thermal energy of the laser may breakdown damaged cells or stimulate collagen production, depending on the type of laser system being used. Aloe Dermatology provides several laser treatment options, including:

How Much Do Laser Treatments Cost?

Am I a Candidate for Laser Treatments?

During the consultation, Dr. Llewellyn evaluates your skin to determine which laser modalities will best address your aesthetic concerns (i.e.. broken capillaries, facial redness, fine lines, poor skin texture, sun spots). Based on his findings, he recommends the laser treatments that are most appropriate to resolve the issues that make your skin look aged and damaged.

What Should I Expect from Laser Treatments?

Laser treatments are relatively painless and often produce results that many people believe require surgery. Each procedure does vary, but in general, expect to feel a slight sting on the skin each time the laser energy is applied. We administer the laser energy in short bursts that most patients find manageable. While improvement may be seen with a single laser treatment, optimal results are usually seen over a short series of laser treatments.

Your skin may feel slightly warm after the treatment, and it may have a slight pink or red coloration. These symptoms last only a few days. The results of laser treatments do take some time, as skin restructuring relies on your body’s response to the thermal stimulation of the laser.

Laser Treatment FAQs

Is laser treatment safe and good for skin?

When performed by a board-certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist, laser skin treatments are generally safe though every procedure has its risks and benefits. Laser procedures may help your skin look younger and reduce the signs of photoaging (sun spots, poor skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, redness and blood vessels). They may also be used to treat acne and reduce scarring from acne, trauma or previous surgeries.

What are the side effects of laser treatment?

Side effects from laser treatments will vary depending on the type of laser used and the condition being treated. Fractional ablative laser resurfacing (Pixel, UltraPulse) results in skin redness, crusting, swelling, and a sun burn like sensation to the skin. Non-ablative laser resurfacing (Vbeam laser, IPL/Photofacial lasers) side effects are less than ablative laser treatments and include some redness and swelling and superficial crusting of sun spots. Other, more uncommon risks and side effects from laser treatment include, but are not limited to, acne flares, skin infection, hyper or hypopigmentation of the skin and scarring.

Does laser cause cancer?

The lasers used in laser hair removal and other laser treatments produce a small amount of radiation. However, it is not harmful, and there is no evidence that it causes skin cancer.

Are at home lasers safe?

The FDA does not regulate at-home laser hair removal devices, so the safety and results are not guaranteed.

What reduces redness after laser treatment?

To minimize redness and swelling following laser treatment, you can use a cold compress or ice pack. It will feel soothing on the irritated skin. You should also avoid the sun and keep the treated area moisturized for a faster recovery.
